Steve McNair and the Legacy of the QB

I was stunned when I heard about former Titans QB Steve McNair being found shot this weekend. Although pro athletes ending up in these situations seems more common than it used to be, it’s still surprising, especially since McNair had already played a full career and seemed to have no history of this kind of thing.

Green Day tickets Boston – 2009 Tour

Click here to see the cheapest Green Day Concert Tickets for Boston in one place.

It’s safe to say that Green Day as a band has successfully achieved cult status over the past two decades. They started out as a small California local band with a grassroots fan base, and with their catchy, and at times even controversial pop punk songs, they have built a tremendous and dedicated fan base over the years that spans across the entire world. They are likely the most influential punk/alternative band in the modern music scene.

The Green Day trio originally formed in 1987 with the name Sweet Children. They started out playing local shows and were discovered by and signed two years later by Lookout! Records and recorded their first EP, “1,000 hours”. Around that time, they began performing under the name Green Day to avoid confusion with a similarly named local band. The rest is rock and roll history. Green Day has gone on to release 8 studio albums and 31 singles. They have sold over 22 million records in the United States alone.

The trio that makes up Green Day include front man Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool. Three guys who started out together with big dreams, the same dreams as thousands of small bands that star every year, but Green Day managed to find success and spread their music to a huge fan base. Now they are another band with longevity that young musicians can emulate.

The 2009 Green Day concert tour, which is their first tour in three years, includes international dates. The tour leads off with, appropriately enough, a show in Seattle on July 3 before heading all over the globe in promotion of their latest album, “21st Century Breakdown”. The album already has five hit singles and has sold more than twelve million copies.

Despite their roots in the punk scene, there is little doubt that Green Day is one of the biggest and most popular bands in existence today, and are the feature of major network interviews, magazine covers and websites.

Green Day will play at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, MA on July 20, 2009. The show starts at 7:30 PM.Tickets and can be purchased at the TD Banknorth Garden Box Office or find the best prices at TicketZinger.com. Doors will open at 6:30 PM. This show is all ages.

Richard Jefferson is Headed to the Spurs

With the NBA Draft looming, teams are working to start trying to shuffle some players and hopefully work some magic for next season. Yesterday several NBA teams were discussing trades and trying to work out deals. Looks like the Spurs, Bucks and Pistons already have pulled the trigger on at least one trade, sending Richard Jefferson to San Antonio and creating a cascade of other moves:

A Bucks official with knowledge of the deal says Milwaukee plans to trade scoring forward Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs for Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto.

The official said Tuesday, in another move, the Bucks would send Oberto to Detroit for forward Amir Johnson.

The person confirmed the pending trade to the Associated Press and requested anonymity because the deal is not official until a call later Tuesday.

The trades will give the Bucks more financial flexibility, the Spurs a proven scorer and Pistons a veteran big man at a lower cost than Johnson.

Blink-182 Tickets Vancouver; Different Acts at GM Place

Click here to see all of the cheapest Blink-182 tickets for Vancouver in one place.

When Blink-182 originally formed in Poway, California as a band named simply, ‘Blink’, they might not have expected that they’d still be touring worldwide 17 years later. Although vocalist and lead guitarist Tom Delonge left the band in 2005, the band announced in February that they were re-forming and ‘picking up where we left off’. Thus, the 2009 summer concert tour now includes Blink-182 hitting a slate of forty-eight North American tour dates.

The tour kicks off in Las Vegas, NV on July 24 and plays throughout the summer at venues in the United States and Canada before playing the final show in Virginia Beach on October 2. Included on the tour are several dates in Canada, one of which is General Motors Place (commonly known as GM Place) in Vancouver, BC.

The announcement that Blink-182 would be re-forming as a group came in the 2009 Grammy Awards, marking the first time the band had been on stage together since 2004. The band also announced that they would be returning to the studio to produce a new album as well.

The Vancouver show will feature the band’s biggest hits, including ‘Adam’s Song’, and ‘All the Small Things’. Unlike some of the U.S. tour dates which feature Weezer and Fall Out Boy, the supporting acts at GM Place will be The All American Rejects and Chester French.

The band played their first appearance together in May of 2009 and hopes to have the new album released by the end of 2009. The band has also appeared in Alternative Press and Rolling Stone.

Favre Admits He Might Play

In a surprise to pretty much no one, Brett Favre stated that he is interested in the Minnesota Vikings after all:

“It makes perfect sense as far as coming back because it’s an offense I ran for 16 years. I can teach the offense,” said Favre, who appeared in Manhattan before a studio audience on the debut “Joe Buck Live” show on HBO.

“It was tough going to New York last year because I was two weeks late and it was a totally new offense,” he said, alluding to his Aug. 6 trade from the Packers. “I thought, ‘This won’t be too bad.’ Brian Schottenheimer and (Eric) Mangini and those guys were great with me. We condensed it down to where I could at least call the plays, but it was like learning a foreign language.”

I think we’ll see a spike in Minnesota Vikings tickets sales if this happens.

Lakers Closing in on Title

I still think Orlando will win game 5 and go back to L.A. down 3 games to 2, but there’s no denying that the entire series might have come down to Jameer Nelson’s lack of defense on Derrick Fisher in Game 4. Orlando has to wonder what might have been while the Lakers ponder a title:

While pandemonium flanks him and other players whistle by, Derek Fisher is the steady tortoise surrounded by hares. His shot begins methodically, a slow squaring of the body that gives way to a rainbow-arcing shot. In his shot’s generous lifespan, from release to splash, a team has enough time to contemplate its future.

2010 Rose Bowl Tickets

Click here to see all of the cheapest 2010 Rose Bowl tickets in one place.

The Rose Bowl and USC have almost become synonymous, but this year the BCS Championship will also be played at the Rose Bowl, so for once, USC will want to avoid the ‘regular’ Rose Bowl and get in the BCS game. The way this works is that the Rose Bowl is still played on January 1, but the BCS will happen a few days later in Pasadena. It’s kind of an odd way to keep all of the bowl games and make a BCS bowl game that stands on it’s own. I’d rather that the BCS Championship game be played in bigger stadiums, like the Super Bowl, but I’d also like to see actual playoffs and a real champion, so what are you gonna do.

Still, the Rose Bowl is one place that every college football fan should visit. It’s in Southern California, nestled among the California mountains and bright in the sunshine.

Minnesota Vikings Just Aren’t Sure They Want the Drama

A lot of Viking fans are chomping at the bit over the idea that maybe, just maybe, Brett Favre will end up wearing the purple and white next year. But the reality is, those fans are blind to the bigger picture, which is that Favre won’t bring a Super Bowl, will bring a lot of prima donna attitude and team friction and may ultimately cost the Viking’s head coach his job.

Favre was undoubtedly one of the greatest winning QBs, and I was/am a huge fan. But Favre’s egotistical manner has become too much trouble for a team to consider. Right now, consider how much noise is being generated of Favre:

Eventually, the Minnesota Vikings will need to know: Is Brett Favre going to play or not?

The Vikings aren’t showing any public impatience with the NFL’s all-time leading passer, even though Favre’s annual waffling over his retirement continues to cloud preparations for the season. Training camp starts in seven weeks.

Even the uncertainty at quarterback — will it be Tarvaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels or Favre? — isn’t enough to get coach Brad Childress to declare an end to the will-he-or-won’t-he dance that’s gone on for weeks.

“Do I need clarity on it? Again, it’s hard to speculate,” Childress said, reiterating yesterday he had set no deadline for Favre to decide.
